Living with Housemates: Pros & Cons (UK)

1. They may end up occupying the hobs all at once so you can't really do your cooking. :/ (My housemate once occupied 3 hobs at once while she was doing her cooking and I was using one stove. She then asked me if I had done my cooking. I was actually going to say no but then I tolerated and said that I was done. Then she used the hob I was using. :/ ) This is also true when someone is washing up the dishes and you have to wait to use the sink. :(

2. If you have Asian housemates, they each may have a rice cooker or a multi-cooker. Because I had 2 Chinese housemates and they each have a rice cooker. So our kitchen has 3 rice cookers. :/

3. If your housemates do not like to share their washing detergent or sponge, be prepared for the sink having many washing detergent bottles and sponges. I think that it's important not to use your housemate's sponges as they may have eating restrictions under religious beliefs. For me, I don't eat beef but my sponge for scrubbing dishes was used by one of my housemates to wash her plates where she eats beef. I'm sorry but her actions disgusts me. You should be aware of your housemates dietary intake and please respect that. Go get yourself your dish washing liquid and sponges if you haven't got one. On the first few days when I just moved in, I placed my sponge at the sink and a few days later found that the sponge had been torn in some parts of it. Every time I finished using my sponge, I would clean it but then someone would use it and the sponge would become dirty. That's why I suspected that someone had been using my sponge. :(

4. If the accommodation you applied says "shared bathroom", I suggest you email your residences office before accepting it. Because I never knew that 5 people would be sharing only 1 bathroom in the whole house, and so you will really have to wait to use the washroom. I usually wake up really early in the morning just to wash myself and sleep late sometimes because all my housemates are taking turns to shower.

5. If you are a really introverted person, I suggest living in a studio is best. I know the price is really expensive or you can just live by yourself. Living by yourself as in renting the whole apartment and only you live in it, no housemates. Because I kind of regret living with strangers and everyone is just so polite and you greet each other every morning, when you bump into each other in every part of the house and when you enter the kitchen and someone is eating at the dining table. :/ I'm sorry if I'm whining a lot but all these just annoys me because you don't really have to say hi every time I see you. I can just do my cooking, and you eat your food. Sometimes, when I get really tired after such a long walk to the grocery store and having to carry all of my groceries by myself, I just want to go home and relax. I don't wanna meet up with people and don't wanna put a smile on my face. I just want to eat because carrying groceries and walking is some hardcore workout.

6. The first few days I moved in, I realised the sound insulation of the house is really bad. I could hear my housemate living next door talking so loudly over the phone to her parents. I have one really loud housemate who just stomps her feet whenever she's in her room which is just right above my room and she would run down the staircase which freaks me out. I mean, can you be a bit gentle when walking and closing the doors? I'm not sure if I'll get anxiety by the end of the semester. :/

7. Your housemates will occupy so much space in the refrigerator and the cupboards. I initially had one whole cupboard to myself until one of my "late arrival" housemate moved in and took half of that space :( . I also had a tray in the freezer (because each person occupies one tray in the freezer) and then realized that one of my housemate occupied half of my space. Why are you invading my space? Why can't you be more considerate? They just end up buying lots of stuff which they cannot finish and then I see so much food waste in the bin! :(   If you cannot finish, then don't buy so much food!

8. Your housemate may not know what is "Recycling". They just end up throwing all the plastic packages in the general bin when all of those could have gone into the "Recycling bin". (We have 2 bins which are the General Waste bin and the Mixed Recycling bin.) And even when the bin is full, they don't bother emptying the bin. :(

These are just some of the things that I have realised after living in UK for just a month. The great thing is that we get a cleaner to clean the kitchen/ common area and the bathroom so we don't have to do much cleaning except vacuuming our rooms.
